Chapter 9: Debanding and Retention

Taking your next steps

In this chapter, we will be taking you through your next steps to integrating Invisalign into your practice. This chapter is made up of 8 steps.

  • Chapter 1: Getting Started
  • Chapter 2: Submitting a case to Invisalign and using IMPACT
  • Chapter 3: Scheduling and appointment sequence
  • Chapter 4: The consultation
  • Chapter 5: Aligner delivery appointment
  • Chapter 6: Interproximal reduction appointment
  • Chapter 7: Refinement “additional aligners” scan appointment
  • Chapter 8: Refinement “additional aligners” delivery appointment
  • Chapter 9: Debranding and retention

Congratulations, the active Invisalign treatment is complete and the patient is ready for retention.

Items needed:

  1. High speed hand-piece with football shaped/flamed shaped carbide bur
  2. Polishing bur (eg. Shofu White stone)
  3. High volume suction
  4. Saliva ejector
  5. Air/water syringe
  6. Floss

  1.

Step 1

Using the high-speed hand-piece and a CARBIDE bur of preference, remove the attachments.

Step 2

Once all the attachments are removed, polish the teeth using a polishing tip.

Step 3

Floss between all the teeth.

Step 4

Allow the patient to fully rinse.

.

Step 5

Take final records (typically intra/extra-oral photos, pano, and scan).

Step 6

Deliver passive aligners as temporary retainers until “final retainers” are ready. ****NOTE: I highly recommend scanning the patient and submitting another Invisalign Rx for “Additional Aligners”. In the “Special Instructions” request “8 sets of Maxillary and Mandibular settling aligners with no attachments on any teeth and no anterior tooth movements 3-3.”

This set of aligners will be their retainers. There are no additional costs to the office or the patient for these retainers.

Step 7

Have the patient sign a retainer contract (Please see page 26).

It’s important to stress that after about 1 year, the patient will likely need new retainers and there is an additional cost for the new retainers.

Step 8

Once the 8 sets of “passive aligners” arrive, provide all 8 sets to the patient and have them wear them nightly. They can wear each aligner set for 2-4 months before switching to a new set. Once the patient completes all their aligners, they can order more retainers from the office, for a fee.

*****************IMPORTANT*************

After the patient completes their initial “retainers” I highly recommend scanning them for Vivera retainers and charging the patient a fee of $500-800.

Congratulations! You’ve Made it.
